Sustainability Update

This month, a year after we published our first sustainability statement, we have been reflecting on our ambitions and actions in this space.

Driven by the B corp accreditation process, we have been working through a framework that forensically examines every part of what we do and how we do it through the lens of people and planet. While an exhaustive process for a very small team in a company that’s only three years old, the benefits of being early in our development as an organisation has meant we can be agile and adaptable, putting in place the necessary data tracking. Examples of this include collecting the diversity information of the companies in our supply chain and surveying key stakeholder groups, which we’ll be publishing in an initial impact report before the summer.

Film Officer Karen Mac, who has been co-ordinating our B corp application, said: “the framework has forced us to study our processes and practices to an externally verified standard and has been hugely helpful in guiding us on what to do and how to start. The great thing it’s exposed is how important all the small actions and decisions we make are, and having a baseline of data will stand us in good stead as we grow and continue to monitor our ways of working.”

We’ve also reviewed our sustainability statement for the coming 12 months, aligning it around People, Planet and Sustainable Growth and simplifying it to focus our efforts on areas where we can make the most difference to our stakeholders. The first product of this is Screen Cornwall’s new production guidelines for sustainable practice that will help those seeking to adopt the Albert principles and adopt a circular approach to working in Cornwall.

This will be a living breathing document that we aim to update as we get information from productions on sustainable solutions they’ve adopted and we’re keen to publish more case studies on best practice as we gather this information. Feedback and continuous improvement are vital to building a sustainable screen industry for the region so please do get in touch if you have any examples or suggestions to add to the production guidelines.
