Graduate Shorts Commissions 2021

We are excited to announce the Graduate Shorts commissions for 2020. Together with Falmouth University's School of Film & TV and the Sound/Image Cinema Lab, we will support three graduate artists to develop bold short films, that have links rooted to Cornwall and a sustainable production ethos.

The winner of this year's graduate Alumni award is Writer/Director Joe Inman and the rest of the Bear Behind You team, Producer Lilly Woodcock and Cinematographer Teddy Freeman. Bear Behind You is a filmmaking collective that focuses on stories of identity and coastal living. Valuing community participation and challenging authorship, they often cast non-actors and use elements of documentary across both fiction and non-fiction projects.

The team have been awarded £5000 to make SPINES, a short film reflective of the class divide in Cornwall following shy and introverted Thomas who finds a new way to tell stories with the help of sporty and outgoing Agnes.

In the doc/experimental category, Director Issy Stephens, Producer Nella Gocal and Sound Designer Lewis Lenk have been awarded £2000 for the creation of NOISE, an experimental film exploring environmental protest in the form of ambient soundscape and animation. The team will utilise a large and impressively diverse crew to call on the community to participate in the film's creative development, supporting those that are rurally isolated to access the arts.

The winner of the 2021 narrative award is writer-director Lizzie Huntzinger for the creation of FLEAS. The short will broach the controversial topic of a man questioning his religion and attempts to address the pain and pressure of guilt in a modern-day revisionist twist on the Adam and Eve story.
