FylmK Commissions 2022

Screen Cornwall works with Cornwall Council to commission a short film in the Cornish Language each year. FylmK has unearthed a broad range of genres and themes being explored in Kernewek and has provided local filmmakers with an opportunity to create contemporary content that adds to the brilliant archive of shorts made in Cornwall. This year, we received the best crop of applications since the scheme began and it was extremely tough to shortlist. Ultimately, we decided to award two very different projects smaller grants, supporting talented individuals with a track record in the wider creative sector who are just emerging as writers/directors in film.

Laura Canning - BLOOM

A grieving teenager takes up running and finds unexpected solace and solidarity in textile dyeing with a painter negotiating her own loss.

Laura Canning is an Irish writer and academic based in Cornwall who has served as executive producer on a number of films including the Screen Cornwall/FylmK short Mab Hudel (dir. Edward Rowe, forthcoming 2022) and the Screen Cornwall Graduate Shorts/BFI Network-funded Roses (dir. Coral Knights, forthcoming 2023), and as producer for To Womb It May Concern (dir. Julia Stubbs, forthcoming 2022) for 20 South Street and Sound/Image Cinema Lab. This is her first film as writer/director.

Ben Kernow - ART

Biddy's never painted before, but she's certain she has a masterpiece up her sleeve.

Hailing from North Cornwall, Ben trained as an actor at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts (ALRA), and has worked on both the stage and screen ever since. In 2018 he formed Ha-Hum-Ah Theatre and began developing his own body of work as both a producer, director and writer. Work for the company has included Moira Buffini's satirycal 'Loveplay' at the Minack Theatre, along with co-productions of 'A Dickensian Christmas' and 'Oh No It isn't!' with intoBodmin. 2021 saw Ha-Hum-Ah expand into the world of film with the creation of Ha-Hum-Ah Films. Ben's first film 'Sensibility', a pastiche on the regency romance novels, is currently embarking on its journey through the festival circuit.
