Cornish Content Commission FAQs

With such a wide range of commissions on offer, we are looking forward to working with lots of new talent and ensuring we are supporting a diverse range of teams. If you’ve not applied for funding before or have any questions or concerns, please do email us any questions you have or join one of the drop-in sessions on Zoom we are running on Thursday 13th February 4pm and Wednesday 21st February 10am. No need to register, just drop-in.

These will be held by Denzil Monk, who is working as Executive Producer with Screen Cornwall on these commissions. Denzil has massive experience in Cornish culture, heritage and media and his own producing work through Bosena, plus as the author of the original Case for a Cornish Public Service Media report, he has long been at the heart of the drive for more opportunities for local talent and more authentic representation on screen – we are very lucky to have him as part of the team!

You can ask anything in the drop-in sessions, no question too obvious, and we’ll capture questions asked and any other FAQs we receive to share here on our website.

  • How much of the content needs to be in Kernewek / Cornish Language?

FylmK Purr Verr (very short) - 100% in Kernewek

FylmK Meur (Plus) - 100% in Kernewek

Feature Film Development - 100% Kernewek

Cornish Mining World Heritage Documentary Short - Significant use of Kernewek.

Comedy Web Series - Significant use of Kernewek.

Are you looking for submissions that justify the use of the language, or just use the language?

We are looking for submissions that use the language in a contemporary context, without having to explain or justify its use. See the FylmK shorts on the iPlayer for examples of this.

    What defines ‘contemporary’ ?

FylmK - The idea is to create stories in a contemporary Kernewek world, not open to ‘period’ pieces.

Feature Film Development - connect with contemporary audiences.

Comedy Web Series - connect with contemporary audiences.

  • Is there any guidance on how much match funding should be on the larger shorts?

No,there’s no minimum amount of match funding required.

If you've got a cracking idea that can be achieved on £10,000 that’s great, as long as it meets our guidelines. However, from our experience of working with these sorts of budgets, it's difficult to do anything more ambitious in terms of shoot days / locations / size of cast without additional funding, which can be a mixture of in-kind and cash.

    What are the payment milestones?

Shorts are generally paid 80% on commission and 20% on delivery.

The comedy web series will be split into an additional milestone of script sign-off so likely 20% / 60% / 20% however this is negotiable.

Feature development will be paid 50% on commencement and 50% on completion of each stage.

Is there guidance on pay rates for actors?

Equity/PACT minimum (varying rates depending on the form the work takes) is encouraged so that all rights are cleared for distribution. Visit Equity website for more guidance.

  • Are students eligible to apply?

Students currently in full-time education will not be eligible to apply unless graduating in the Summer of 2024.

Am I eligible if I live outside Cornwall?

If you live outside Cornwall, you do need to find local collaborators to apply and have the best chance of success. As stated before if you don’t have a local producer/production company at application, but everything else scores very well we may be able to help. Essentially we are aiming for as much of the funding to be spent in the region but are also keen to see what stories emerge from people in the diaspora.

Can you apply if you’ve received Screen Cornwall funding before?

If you’ve been funded before, you can apply again however we’d generally like to see a progression in the level of ambition of what you want to make.

  • What are the location permissions at CMWH sites?

For the purposes of the application please assume that filming permission for all Mining World Heritage Sites will be granted, subject to access times / dates requested being convenient for the onsite teams.

  • The basic answer is yes, although it should be noted that if there is a project that scores the same in the other criteria and does have a producer, that would get the edge. If the panel scores your application well but no producer is attached, we’d need to help you find someone mutually acceptable to work with before any funding offer could be confirmed.

  • We'd strongly encourage applicants to focus their efforts and select their best idea that fits the commission brief most closely. You can apply to more than one commission strand however bear in mind that deliverability within the timeframe is essential, so we would encourage applicants to consider feasibility and timescales if making multiple submissions.

  • We will shortlist the week commencing 26th February and hold interviews in early March. Everyone will know the outcome of their application no later than Friday 15th March.

  • Each delivery date is different so generally, we’ll need a breakdown of script development / sign-off, pre-production, production, post-production and delivery with a more detailed indication of a number of shoot days in the production section.

Detailed milestones will be negotiated for each commission and put in the contract.
